MPP Director Mike Rocca recently participated in a panel discussion at the Economic Forum of Albuquerque on the relationship between local businesses and policymakers in New Mexico. The conversation explored how the business community engages with the policy process, the challenges of collaboration in a polarized environment, and ways to build stronger, proactive partnerships with legislators.
Other panelists included Will Martinez (State and Local Director at RS21; UNM Political Science alum), Jason Weaks (Attorney and Lobbyist, The Weaks Law Firm, P.C.; UNM Political Science alum), Rhiannon Samuel (Executive Director, NAIOP New Mexico; UNM Intercultural Communication alum), and Jason Harper (former State Representative; Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from UNM).
The panel emphasized the importance of evidence-based policymaking, relationship-building, and preparing the next generation of leaders to connect data, policy, and community impact—core principles of the UNM Master of Public Policy program.
The event was organized by Economic Forum Executive Director Emily Howard, who opened the session with a presentation of a fascinating study commissioned by the Forum. The study examined how both business leaders and the public perceive the role of the business community in shaping policy, setting the stage for a thoughtful and engaging discussion.
