The MPP Program

UNM hot air balloon above Rio Grande

The UNM Master of Public Policy prepares students to become skilled, thoughtful policy analysts. Our graduates work in state and local government, federal agencies, tribal communities, nonprofit organizations, and private firms — tackling the kinds of complex, real-world problems that matter to New Mexico and beyond.

Our interdisciplinary curriculum draws from political science, economics, sociology, and public administration. Students build a strong analytical foundation while gaining hands-on experience through the Evaluation Lab, where they conduct real program evaluations with real community partners. An ongoing Policy Seminar connects students with practitioners, deepens professional skills, and builds the cohort community that MPP students consistently cite as one of the program's greatest strengths.

Where can an MPP take you?

Our graduates are working across New Mexico and beyond in roles that matter. Here's where alumni have landed:

In state government — analysts and advisors at the New Mexico Legislative Finance Committee, the Legislative Education Study Committee, the Department of Finance and Administration, the Department of Transportation, the State Ethics Commission, and the Department of Justice.

In advocacy and nonprofit work — including policy roles at the ACLU of New Mexico and organizations focused on health, housing, education, and community development.

In Washington, D.C. — including a finance fellow with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and policy roles at national research institutions and think tanks.

In higher education and research — as researchers at universities and policy research organizations across the country.

Close to home — many of our alumni remain in New Mexico, building careers in the communities they came from and care about. That's not a limitation of the degree. It's a reflection of who our students are.
