Curriculum
"I like it <the interdisciplinary nature of the program> overall, because it allows for many perspectives and methodologies for looking at community problems. Also the interdisciplinary nature allows for us to get in-depth with topics we are interested in through the complimentary program, but also forces us to get a general knowledge in other areas we might not have thought about previously." - 2020 UNM MPP Graduate
The MPP requires 43 total credit hours. Students master methodological and statistical skills and gain the substantive knowledge that prepares them to enter the workforce as qualified policy analysts. Most full-time students complete the program in 2 years. For more information on degree requirements, see UNM's 2023-2024 Catalog.
See a sample outline of the MPP program.
There are five required components:
1-CORE CURRICULUM (21 credits)
Students will develop key competencies in quantitative research and the fundamentals of public policy through 7 courses, including a required course on diversity.
2-COMPLEMENTARY POLICY AREA (9 credits)
With guidance from a faculty advisor, students will build their own complementary policy area by taking three electives. Many substantive policy areas will draw on courses that cross disciplinary boundaries.
3-POLICY SEMINAR (1-3 credits)
All MPP students will participate in 7 credits of the Policy Seminar which develops leadership, writing, presentation and other professional skills, and which serves as the integrative capstone course in the final semester.
4-EVALUATION LAB (6 credits)
MPP students gain hands-on experience in the Evaluation Lab by working collaboratively with community organizations and serving as interns for policy centers, public agencies and non-profits.
5-POLICY REPORT
The MPP Master’s Examination consists of a written Policy Report and an oral presentation of the Report. Students will receive guidance in preparing the Policy Report and presentation in the Policy Seminar (PUBP 501). Students should take one of the required PUBP 501 credits during the semester in which they plan to complete the Policy Report requirement.
